Up until now, Photoshop has been my go to program for inking, doodling, and drawing. That has all changed after finally trying out Sketchbook Pro. Like everything else, including getting rid of my fanny pack, I am 10-15 years behind the curve. I’m ashamed of myself for not trying this program sooner. For drawing digitally, it feels more natural than any program I have come across. Go download the trial version.

Here’s a good article in Adage about youtube content creation/ creators

My top three favorite online cartoons/ “bite sized” entertainment youtube things:
1. Supernews: If you haven’t watched this. Go now, watch. Sometimes I watch this and get pissed off that they are stealing all of the good ideas in the world.
2. Homestarrunner: I don’t really watch this anymore, but I often stop back to their site to see if they are still pulling it off. It’s a great example of pulling in traffic with minimal animation, design and mediocre audio. The idea is so crazy it is hypnotizing. Strongbad is pretty funny too
3. Happy Tree Friends: These are pretty good. Cuddly creatures end up getting ripped to shreds in every episode.
Honorable mention: Romp.com (early 2000’s) - This needs to make a comeback

I expected this video to be seen by maybe 10,000 people.

I bought this book on amazon.com last year and was amazed I hadn’t come across it sooner. I buy used books on animation, comics, story structure etc… on amazon.com all the time, but 90% of them are painful to read. This book breaks down every type of joke you will ever hear or see into formulas and categories. It really hits on story structure quite well and simplifies that whole process.
Highly recommend this book.
Last month, Chad Wienczkowski and myself were interviewed by David Lee for Jenesis Magazine (Pittsburgh based) about “Animating Asher.” Click the thumbnails below to read…
disclaimer: 1. I say the word “like” more than a 16 yr old girl
I wrote and shot a short film this weekend. It’s called “Rebound,” about a sap who has a difficult time trying to find love on the internet.
The shoot went well. We rented a bunch of gear from Hello World and shot for about 15 hours between Friday night and Sunday afternoon.
Here is a sketch I made while writing and a picture of Daniel played by Brad Ellis.
I have no clue what this film will look like when it’s finished. We did some hilarious takes and had some great actors. Big concerns of mine are audio levels in one scene and continuity with the light levels in another scene.
All in all, it was a pretty good learning experience. The next one will go much smoother.
Updates to come as editing begins.
